2.1.5.2. Jitter Buffer Modes Previous topic Parent topic Child topic Next topic

The jitter buffer of the gateways HG 3500/3575 can be operated in two different modes, depending on the connection:
  • Static jitter buffer
  • adaptive (dynamic) jitter buffer
The adaptive jitter buffer is designed specifically for voice transmission. While the average packet delay remains constant in static mode, it automatically adapts to the situation in adaptive mode. Figure 5 Difference between static and adaptive jitter buffer illustrates the difference between static and adaptive jitter buffers in a situation where several packets with longer delays arrive.
In the adaptive jitter buffer, the average delay is simply the start value for the average delay. This is automatically adjusted to the respective receive ratios during operation (green line).
